The CID full form is Criminal Investigation Department. Most state police forces use that name, though some, such as Maharashtra, call it the Crime Investigation Department. Either way, it is the specialist investigation branch of a state police, separate from the law-and-order wing that runs a station's daily work.
A CID does not handle a beat. It is called in where a case needs sustained, skilled investigation: murder, kidnapping, fraud, forgery, organised crime, human trafficking, cybercrime and economic offences. A state government can hand a case to the CID when it wants the probe taken out of the local station's hands, and a High Court can direct a CID investigation when it doubts that a fair inquiry is happening locally.
How the department grew out of British-era policing
The CID has colonial roots. The Indian Police Commission of 1902 to 1903, headed by Andrew Fraser, recommended a Criminal Investigation Department in every province. The Government of India accepted the proposal in 1905, and provincial departments followed, including Bombay in 1905 and Bengal in 1906. Dates quoted for the first CID vary because some sources count the commission's report and others count the creation of each department.
Today each state has its own CID, usually headed by an officer of Additional Director General of Police rank, who reports to the state Director General of Police. In some states, such as Tamil Nadu, a Crime Branch CID (CB-CID) acts as the elite state-level unit. The ranks mirror the regular force because CID officers are usually drawn from the same cadre.
The wings inside a state CID
A state CID is rarely one undifferentiated unit. Most have an Economic Offences Wing for bank fraud, chit fund scams and cheating cases, and a cyber crime unit for online fraud and account hacking. Several states also run an Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, and special investigation teams are formed when a High Court wants a case monitored.
Vigilance and anti-corruption work sits inside the CID in some states and in a separate Anti-Corruption Bureau in others, so the structure changes from state to state.
CID is not the CBI
The two names are often mixed up. The CID belongs to a state government and works under the state police. The CBI is a central agency that works under the Union government. A case can move from one to the other: a state may hand over a case to the CBI, or a court may order the transfer.
The law is the same in both: since July 2024 the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) governs investigation procedure, replacing the old Code of Criminal Procedure. The difference is jurisdiction and reporting line, not the legal powers of arrest and search.
How officers end up in the CID
There is no single all-India CID entrance examination. Most CID posts are filled by posting or transfer rather than fresh recruitment: a constable or sub-inspector who has shown a knack for investigation is moved across, and inspectors and DSP level officers are selected on their record in solving cases. A few states advertise some CID posts directly.
At the top sit Indian Police Service officers. So the realistic route for a young aspirant is to clear the state police recruitment examination or the UPSC Civil Services Examination for the IPS, serve a field posting, and then move into the CID.
CID in popular culture
For many Indians the first image is the Sony television series CID, which began in 1998 and ran until 2018, one of the longest-running crime shows on Indian television. Characters such as ACP Pradyuman, Daya and Abhijeet made the acronym a household name.
Real CID work looks different on the ground: case diaries, forensic reports, witness statements and long court submissions. When a newspaper says a case has been handed to the CID, it usually means the government or a court has decided the local police should not be the ones investigating it.
Think of the CID as the state police force's investigation bench: fewer officers, longer cases, and a remit that begins where a local station's capacity ends.
