CGST Full Form
Central Goods and Services Tax
What does CGST stand for? A finance term, explained.
CGST Full Form in English, letter by letter
CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax) is the central half of GST charged on sales within a single state in India.
CGST Full Form in Indian Languages
A ₹1,000 phone charger bought in your own city shows two tax lines, not one. The central half is CGST, the Central Goods and Services Tax, shown below in six Indian languages.
What CGST Covers
GST replaced a number of central and state taxes and cesses when it went live on 1 July 2017. CGST is the half collected by the Union on any supply that stays inside one state: a Chennai shop billing a Chennai customer, a Bengaluru plumber charging a flat in the same city. Cross the border and the same supply becomes IGST.
Since the rationalisation of September 2025, most goods and services fall in two main slabs, 5 and 18 per cent, with a 40 per cent rate on a short list of demerit goods, nil rates on essentials and special lower rates such as 3 per cent for gold. On an 18 per cent item sold within a state the invoice splits into 9 per cent CGST and 9 per cent SGST, so a ₹1,000 charger (before tax) carries ₹90 to the Centre and ₹90 to the state. The split is always even; the GST Council sets the rates.
How CGST Money Reaches the Government
The seller charges CGST on the invoice, deposits it through the GST portal, and claims credit for the CGST paid on their own purchases. Section 49 of the CGST Act fixes the order in which input tax credit can be used: IGST credit first against IGST, then CGST, then SGST. CGST credit can never be adjusted against an SGST liability.
Monthly returns keep the chain honest. GSTR-1, listing outward supplies, is due by the 11th of the following month and GSTR-3B, the summary return with payment, by the 20th for regular monthly filers. Taxpayers under the quarterly scheme have different dates, around the 13th for GSTR-1 and the 22nd or 24th for GSTR-3B. Because credit appears only when the supplier reports the invoice, a missed return upstream can block the buyer's claim downstream.
Registration Thresholds and the Intra-State Test
Businesses register once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods (₹20 lakh in some states) or ₹20 lakh for services, with lower limits in special-category states, usually ₹10 lakh for services and ₹20 lakh for goods. Some suppliers must register regardless of turnover, including many that sell through e-commerce platforms and those making inter-state taxable supplies of services.
The place of supply, not the address on the invoice, decides CGST versus IGST. A Delhi shop delivering to Gurugram is making an inter-state supply and charges IGST; a Delhi-to-Delhi sale splits into CGST and SGST. Misreading this produces wrong tax, mismatched returns and a notice.
The composition scheme is an option for small players with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore. Eligible traders and manufacturers pay a flat 1 per cent of turnover (5 per cent for restaurants), file simplified quarterly returns and skip invoice-level matching. The price is giving up input credit, not being able to charge GST on bills and accepting no inter-state sales, which is why many businesses exit it as they grow.
CGST in Exams and in the News
SSC, banking and UPSC papers ask the full form and the split: CGST to the Centre, SGST to the state, IGST on inter-state trade. A detail worth remembering is that GST Council decisions need a three-fourths majority, with the Centre holding a third of the votes and states together two-thirds.
Monthly gross GST collections, under ₹1 lakh crore in 2018-19, have run well above ₹1.7 lakh crore in recent years. Within that figure the CGST and SGST portions are roughly equal, with IGST on inter-state trade and imports, and cess where it still applies, shown separately.
A Worked Invoice Example
A Pune electronics dealer sells a laptop bag to a Pune customer for a taxable value of ₹2,000 at 18 per cent. CGST is ₹180 and SGST is ₹180, so the customer pays ₹2,360. The dealer deposits ₹180 as CGST to the Centre and ₹180 as SGST to Maharashtra, after setting off credits on purchases.
If the dealer bought the stock from a Maharashtra supplier, the purchase invoice also carried CGST and SGST, and the CGST paid there is claimed against this sale. If the bag came from a Gujarat supplier, the purchase carried IGST instead, and that credit is used first. Either way, the dealer pays only the difference between tax collected and credit available.
For a small business, the practical core of CGST is one classification: intra-state supply splits into CGST and SGST, inter-state becomes IGST. Get that right and file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B on time, and most GST compliance trouble stays away.
CGST Full Form: Common Questions
What is the full form of CGST?
CGST means Central Goods and Services Tax. It is the component of GST collected by the central government on supplies made within a single state, alongside an equal SGST share going to that state.
What is the difference between CGST and SGST?
Both are charged on one intra-state supply, each at half the applicable GST rate. On an 18 per cent item, 9 per cent goes to the Centre as CGST and 9 per cent to the state as SGST.
When did CGST start in India?
GST, including CGST, rolled out on 1 July 2017 under the CGST Act, 2017. It subsumed 17 central and state taxes and 13 cesses into one structure administered through the GST portal.
Do I need a GSTIN to charge CGST?
Only registered businesses can charge GST. Registration is compulsory above the turnover threshold (₹40 lakh for goods in most states, ₹20 lakh for services), for certain categories regardless of turnover, and optional if you choose voluntary registration. You apply on gst.gov.in with PAN, Aadhaar authentication, address proof and bank details, and the number is quoted on every tax invoice.
Is CGST asked in competitive exams?
It appears regularly in SSC, banking and state service papers, usually as a full-form question or a split-and-rate calculation. Pair it with SGST, IGST and the GST Council voting pattern for a complete answer.
Can CGST credit be used to pay SGST?
No. CGST credit can be used to pay CGST first and then IGST, but never SGST. This is one of the standard rules of input tax credit set-off.
