The seven forces that make up the CAPF

The CAPF full form is Central Armed Police Forces, and it covers seven organisations: BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, NSG and Assam Rifles. None of them belongs to the Army, and all are administered by the Ministry of Home Affairs. In the case of Assam Rifles, day-to-day operations in border areas are under the Army's operational control while pay, rules and administration stay with the Home Ministry.

They split by job. CRPF is the largest force and takes internal security, counter-insurgency and election duty. BSF, ITBP and SSB are border forces. CISF protects airports, metros and industrial installations, while the NSG is the counter-terror commando unit.

Which force guards which frontier

Border duty is divided by geography. BSF (Border Security Force) holds the Pakistan and Bangladesh borders, ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) holds the frontier with China, and SSB (Sashastra Seema Bal) covers Nepal and Bhutan. Assam Rifles looks after the Myanmar border in Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram, among other duties in the north-east.

That division explains the headlines. A story about central forces in Kashmir usually means CRPF, and 'BSF firing' on the border refers to the force that runs the fence along Punjab and Rajasthan.

Inside the CAPF Assistant Commandant exam

UPSC recruits Assistant Commandants (Group A officers) every year through the CAPF (AC) examination. The basic eligibility is a bachelor's degree and an age of 20 to 25 years, with relaxation for SC, ST and OBC candidates under the usual central government rules. Only some posts are open to women in certain forces, so the notification lists vacancies force by force.

The written stage has two papers held on the same day: Paper I is General Ability and Intelligence (objective), and Paper II is General Studies, Essay and Comprehension (descriptive). Those who clear it face the physical standards and physical efficiency tests, then a medical examination, and finally an interview (personality test).

Final ranking is based on the written marks plus the interview marks, while the physical and medical stages are qualifying. Vacancies change from year to year and have run in the low hundreds across the seven forces, so cutoffs stay high. Preparation centres on general awareness, essay writing and speed, rather than the mathematics seen in banking papers.

CAPF, Army or state police: where each fits

The clean distinction is this. The Army works under the Ministry of Defence and is used against external aggression. CAPFs are armed police under the Ministry of Home Affairs, used for internal security and border guarding. State police report to the state government and handle law and order inside the state.

This is also how to read the news. When the Centre sends forces to a troubled state it sends CAPF companies, and when a state asks for paramilitary help during an election or a riot it is asking for CRPF or BSF battalions, not Army units.

Why some people still say CPMF

Older textbooks and news archives use CPMF, Central Paramilitary Forces, for the same group of organisations. The government settled on Central Armed Police Forces to stress that these are police forces under the Home Ministry, and CPMF is now treated as outdated in official use.

The letters are also used for the examination itself. A search for 'CAPF result' almost always means the Assistant Commandant recruitment result published by UPSC, not a report about any single force. Constable and sub-inspector posts in these forces are filled separately through SSC.

Ranks, pay and training in a CAPF uniform

A direct-recruited Assistant Commandant rises through Deputy Commandant, Second-in-Command, Commandant, DIG, IG and ADG up to Director General. Pay follows the Central Pay Commission scales, with risk and field allowances added in disturbed areas. Senior posts in several forces are held by IPS officers on deputation, a long-running point of dispute with cadre officers about promotions.

Training begins at force academies, such as the BSF academy at Tekanpur in Madhya Pradesh, and runs for months rather than weeks. Officers then rotate through in-service courses across their career.

CAPF is the umbrella name for the seven central forces under the Home Ministry that guard India's borders and support internal security. For aspirants, the CAPF (AC) paper is one of the few UPSC routes to a Group A officer's post outside the civil services, and for everyone else the term makes sense of most central-forces headlines.
