What BHEL makes

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited is one of India's largest engineering and manufacturing companies in the energy sector. It builds steam and gas turbines, generators, boilers, hydro turbines, transformers, switchgear and control systems, and it delivers complete power plants on an engineering, procurement and construction basis. Tiruchirappalli is known for boilers, while Haridwar and Bhopal are the centres for turbines, generators and other heavy electrical equipment.

Beyond coal and gas, BHEL supplies equipment for hydro, solar and nuclear projects, transmission gear, and traction equipment for electric locomotives on Indian Railways. Defence, aerospace and oil and gas instrumentation sit in smaller divisions.

The Government of India holds roughly 63 per cent of the shares, which makes BHEL a central public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Heavy Industries. It has Maharatna status, granted in 2013. Its shares trade on the BSE and the NSE.

How the company was built

BHEL was incorporated in 1964 and grew with India's power programme. Over the following decades it set up units at Bhopal, Tiruchirappalli, Hyderabad, Haridwar, Jhansi and other places, and it opened a nationwide network of site offices to erect and commission plants.

Public sector companies can be graded by the government, and BHEL moved up the ladder of status, reaching the Maharatna grade in 2013.

Equipment you have probably used

A large share of India's coal-based power capacity has run on BHEL sets for decades, and state electricity boards, NTPC and private producers have ordered from it. Transformers and switchgear from its units feed distribution networks across most states.

What Maharatna status means

Maharatna companies get greater freedom on investment and joint ventures within government-set limits, without approaching the ministry for every decision. A small group of public sector companies hold the grade.

Where BHEL shows up in the news

Most BHEL news is order-book news: a new boiler contract from a state utility, a hydro turbine order, an EPC package for a power station. Order inflow and quarterly results are watched as a rough indicator of power-sector investment.

The other recurring topic is recruitment. BHEL hires engineers largely through GATE scores, with separate notifications for diploma and ITI holders.

Why growth slowed and what changed

Thermal power orders slowed after about 2012-14, when many power projects were stuck and the sector was struggling with stressed assets. BHEL's order book and profits came under pressure as a result.

Recovery has come from replacement orders, modernisation and uprating of old plants, hydro work and a push into renewables and transmission. Private Indian firms and foreign manufacturers compete on price and delivery, so the comfortable decades of steady demand are over.

When reading BHEL's reports, look at three things. The order book shows how much work is already booked, the segment results split power from industrial business, and the cash position shows whether customers are paying on time. State utilities sometimes pay late, which affects the working capital of suppliers like BHEL.

Careers and where to track BHEL

Engineer recruitment has relied on GATE scores, so aspirants should watch BHEL's careers page through the year. Apprenticeships under the Apprentices Act offer an entry route for ITI and diploma holders at its manufacturing units.

For investors and students, the useful sources are BHEL's annual report and quarterly filings on the stock exchanges, which break down performance by segment. Read the notes, not only the headline profit figure.

Bharat Heavy Electricals grew with India's power sector and now faces more competition than before. Its order book is a useful reading of where electricity investment is heading, and for job seekers its notifications are worth watching through the year.
