Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering
What does GATE stand for? A education term, explained.
GATE Full Form in English, letter by letter
GATE is the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, a national exam for M.Tech admissions and some PSU jobs, held by the IITs and IISc.
GATE Full Form in Indian Languages
GATE sits between a bachelor's degree and an M.Tech seat or a PSU job. Here is Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, with its name in six Indian languages.
What GATE tests and who runs it
GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It is a national computer-based exam that checks how well you understood your undergraduate engineering or science subjects, not how much you can recall on the day.
One of the IITs or IISc Bangalore organises it each year in turn. IISc Bangalore ran GATE 2024 and IIT Roorkee ran GATE 2025, while GATE 2027 is organised by IIT Madras. The paper lasts three hours, carries 100 marks and is offered in about 30 subject papers, from civil and mechanical to computer science, electronics, biotechnology and more.
Exam pattern in numbers
Every paper has 15 marks of general aptitude and 85 marks of the core subject. Questions come in three formats: multiple choice questions with negative marking (one-third of the marks for a wrong one-mark answer, two-thirds for a wrong two-mark answer), multiple select questions where every correct option must be chosen, and numerical answer questions where you type a value. The last two carry no negative marking.
Papers held in several sessions are normalised to adjust for the difficulty of each slot. Your result shows marks out of 100, an All India Rank and a GATE score, and the score is what institutes and PSUs usually shortlist on.
Eligibility and application
Students in the third year or later of a bachelor's degree, and postgraduates, can apply, and there is no upper age limit. Applications are online on the official GATE portal, normally in August and September for an exam in February. Fees differ by category and are set each year, so check the brochure.
You may appear in up to two papers from a permitted combination, and the score stays valid for three years from the date the result is declared. A single preparation cycle can therefore serve three rounds of admissions and recruitment.
For GATE 2027, the information brochure listed the exam days as 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, with results due in March 2027 and registration held in August and September 2026. Dates can be revised, so confirm them on the official portal. Keep scanned copies of your photograph, signature, ID and category certificate ready before you register.
What a GATE score is used for
M.Tech and PhD admissions at the IITs and IISc run through the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP), while NITs, IIITs and other government-funded institutes allot seats through CCMT. Candidates are shortlisted on GATE score and, depending on the institute, academic record, written tests and interviews. Qualifying marks are published after the exam and differ by paper and category.
Some public sector undertakings, such as NTPC, ONGC, IOCL, BHEL and PGCIL, have used GATE score to shortlist engineers for trainee posts, sometimes followed by a group discussion and interview. Whether a company still does so, and the cut-off, varies by year, so read each company's notification. A GATE score can also help with a fellowship while you study, depending on the institute.
Preparing without wasting a year
The syllabus is mostly your undergraduate syllabus, which makes the last ten to fifteen years of question papers the most useful material you have. Solve them under a three-hour clock and not in pieces. Speed and the choice of which questions to attempt matter as much as knowledge.
Keep one formula sheet per subject and revise it weekly, give the aptitude section a fixed slot each week since 15 marks are easy to protect, and take full mock tests from December so that the last month is about stamina and not new chapters.
GATE is one three-hour paper that decides postgraduate seats and some engineering jobs across India. Prepare from past papers, protect your aptitude marks, and remember that the score gives you three years of use.

Can a BSc graduate write GATE?
Yes, for papers where science degrees are listed as eligible, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and some life science papers. Check the eligibility table in the brochure for your degree and paper.
