What AEPS does

Aadhaar Enabled Payment System lets a bank customer withdraw cash, deposit cash, check a balance or get a mini statement using the twelve-digit Aadhaar number and a fingerprint or iris scan, without a card. The account must be linked (seeded) to Aadhaar.

The system is run by NPCI, the National Payments Corporation of India. It is mainly meant for people who live far from a branch or ATM, because an agent's shop with a micro-ATM device can serve any bank that is on the AEPS network.

The procedure takes about a minute. The agent selects your bank, enters your Aadhaar number, picks the transaction and amount, and you press your finger on the scanner. The device checks your biometric against the record held by UIDAI, the transaction goes through, and a slip prints. Keep that slip.

The transactions you can do

Cash withdrawal is the most used service, followed by cash deposit, balance enquiry and a mini statement of recent transactions. Some banks also offer transfers between Aadhaar-linked accounts through the same device.

The service matters most for welfare payments. MGNREGA wages, pensions and other direct benefit transfers land in the bank account, and a villager can withdraw them from the nearest agent. This is why banking correspondents and Common Service Centre operators are often a family's nearest AEPS point.

Not every bank takes part in every service, so ask the agent whether your bank is available before you travel. A mini statement shows only the last few entries, so for a full record use your passbook or the bank's own channels.

Limits and charges

NPCI caps the amount for a single AEPS cash withdrawal, and the usual figure quoted is Rs 10,000. Banks may also set daily limits of their own, so confirm the exact figure with your bank.

Fees depend on the bank's arrangement with the agent. Withdrawals made to receive DBT benefits are generally meant to be free for the customer. If an agent asks for a charge, ask what it is for and get a receipt.

AEPS has no card or PIN, so there is no password to forget, but the transaction depends on your fingerprint matching UIDAI's record. People who do heavy manual work often find that their fingerprints wear down, which is the most common reason for repeated failures. Ask the bank how it can help you update your biometric details.

Who runs AEPS points and how to check your linking

The outlets work under the RBI banking correspondent framework. Agents may be village-level business correspondents, CSC operators, shopkeepers or microfinance staff, each acting for one or more banks. Their device is a micro-ATM: a fingerprint scanner attached to a phone or a small computer.

For AEPS to work, your Aadhaar must be linked to the bank account and the bank must be enabled for it. UIDAI's website shows your bank-seeding status, and your bank branch can confirm it. If the status shows inactive, a visit to the branch with your Aadhaar usually fixes it. If a fingerprint keeps failing because of dry skin or worn ridges, ask the agent about iris authentication, or ask the bank to update your biometrics.

AEPS compared with UPI and ATM withdrawals

UPI needs a smartphone, an app and a PIN, and it is built for paying, not for taking out cash. An ATM needs a card and a machine nearby. AEPS fills the gap: cash in hand with nothing but a fingerprint.

Fraud is the trade-off. Cases of cloned fingerprints and dishonest agents have been reported, so take the slip or the SMS, never let anyone else hold your finger on the scanner, and check your balance afterwards.

If AEPS goes wrong

If money is debited but no cash comes out, note the reference number printed on the slip, check your mini statement, and tell your bank on the same day. Failed transactions are normally reversed once the banks reconcile them, and a written complaint speeds that up.

If you suspect misuse, contact your bank immediately and use the national cyber-crime helpline 1930 or the cybercrime portal. You can also lock your Aadhaar biometrics from the UIDAI website and unlock them only when needed.

AEPS is the system behind the fingerprint machines in many villages. Link Aadhaar to your account, use a trusted agent and keep the slip.

NPCI sets a ceiling for a single cash withdrawal, commonly quoted as Rs 10,000, and banks may set daily limits of their own. Confirm the current figure with your bank.
