A condition of attention and self-control, not of effort

ADHD is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, a neurodevelopmental condition. People with it show ongoing inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity beyond what is expected for their age, and it gets in the way of school, work or relationships.

It is not laziness and it is not bad parenting. Research describes it as largely genetic, with heritability estimated at around 70 to 80 percent, so it often runs in families.

What it can look like at home and in class

A child may not finish homework, lose a school bag every week, fidget through the lesson or blurt out answers. A teacher may call it carelessness. The difference with ADHD is that it persists for months, shows up in more than one place, and begins before age 12.

Girls are often missed. They tend to show fewer hyperactive signs and more daydreaming and forgetfulness, which can be read as being spacey instead of as ADHD.

Three presentations, and adults too

Clinicians describe predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive and combined presentations. Which one applies can change as a person grows.

In adults, hyperactivity usually turns into inner restlessness. What you notice is more often disorganisation, trouble starting or finishing tasks, impatience and stress. Many adults first hear about ADHD when their own child is assessed.

Things that get mistaken for ADHD, and the other way round

Not every restless child has ADHD. Poor sleep, anxiety, vision or hearing problems, and a stressful home or school can all look similar. That is why a doctor asks about several settings and about the full history before saying anything.

It also works in reverse. ADHD can sit alongside other conditions, such as anxiety or learning difficulties, and one can hide the other. A child who is bright but keeps failing tests may need a proper assessment instead of more tuition.

If exams are the worry, ask the school what support it can offer. Some boards and institutions allow accommodations for documented conditions, but the rules differ, so ask for the written policy.

Getting it checked, and what help looks like

Only a qualified professional can diagnose ADHD, usually a psychiatrist, paediatrician or clinical psychologist. They look at the history, ask about different settings and rule out other causes. A free online quiz can raise a question but cannot answer it.

Treatment is decided by the doctor. Medical sources describe it as most effective when medicines are combined with therapy, and school or workplace adjustments can also help. Please do not start or stop any medicine on your own.

Many families worry about labels. It helps to remember that a diagnosis is a route to support, such as extra time or a different seating plan, and not a verdict on the child.

If you recognise yourself or your child in this, write down examples and speak to a doctor. A clear diagnosis tends to be more useful than a label from a quiz or a relative.
