Accountants, factory managers and software teams all talk about WIP, Work in Progress, because it shows where money or effort is stuck halfway. Here is what counts as WIP, how it is booked, and why people try to shrink it.

What counts as work in progress

The full form of WIP is Work in Progress, sometimes written Work in Process in accounting books. It covers goods that have entered production but are not finished, along with the material, labour and overhead already spent on them.

On the balance sheet, WIP sits inside inventory as a current asset, because the company has paid for it and expects to sell it. When production finishes it moves to finished goods, and when sold it becomes cost of goods sold.

The three cost buckets are worth remembering. Direct materials are added as they are issued, direct labour as the work is done, and manufacturing overhead (power, machine time, supervision) is applied at a rate the company sets in advance.

Calculating WIP with a worked example

The basic arithmetic: closing WIP equals opening WIP plus all manufacturing costs added in the period, minus the cost of goods completed.

A worked example: a furniture workshop starts the month with ₹2 lakh of WIP. It adds ₹3 lakh of timber, ₹1.5 lakh of labour and ₹50,000 of overhead, so ₹7 lakh of cost is in play. Goods costing ₹5.5 lakh are completed and move to finished goods. Closing WIP is ₹7 lakh minus ₹5.5 lakh, which is ₹1.5 lakh.

That ₹1.5 lakh carries into next month as the opening balance. Most factories keep this record inside an ERP system, where each job card shows what has been issued and what is complete. The same approach works for a printing press with half-printed orders or a garment unit with fabric on the cutting floor.

WIP in a factory and on a building site

In manufacturing, WIP is the trolley of half-built products between raw material and finished goods. On a construction site it looks different: a project under construction for the company's own use is held as capital work in progress, a non-current asset, and is not depreciated until it is ready for use.

For long-running contracts, revenue is recognised as work progresses under the accounting standard in force (Ind AS 115 for companies following Ind AS). The value of work done minus what has been billed shows up as an asset, or as a liability if the customer has been billed ahead of the work.

In India, Ind AS 2 and the older AS 2 require inventory including WIP to be valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value. That rule matters for builders and project firms carrying unfinished work. Your auditor and accountant will say which standard applies to you.

Why companies watch WIP closely

Every rupee sitting in WIP has left the bank account but not come back. High WIP means working capital is trapped on the shop floor, and it usually points to a bottleneck somewhere along the line.

Lean and just-in-time production aim to cut WIP to a minimum by producing only what the next stage needs. The Toyota Production System, on which lean is built, treats excess work in progress as waste.

There is a limit to the logic. Too little WIP starves the next station and leaves machines idle, so experienced managers aim for a small, steady buffer rather than zero.

Managers often track a KPI such as WIP days, meaning how many days of production sit unfinished on the floor. Finance teams also read WIP movements as a warning sign. A sudden jump without a matching rise in sales can mean inefficiency or cost overruns, and in the worst case inflated assets.

WIP limits in Kanban and software teams

Outside the factory floor, WIP means unfinished tasks on a board. Kanban puts a hard cap, say four items in progress per person, so work flows through instead of piling up half done.

The reason is measurable. Little's Law says average cycle time equals the amount of work in the system divided by the rate at which work finishes. Hold throughput steady and more open tasks mean every task takes longer. Teams with WIP limits often finish more, not less.

Scrum teams borrow the same idea during sprints by committing to fewer items. Boards often display the limit as a number at the top of each column, so anyone can see when it is full.

WIP as everyday shorthand

Outside accounting and project work, WIP is simply shorthand for something unfinished. Artists post a work-in-progress sketch, game developers share a WIP build, and people put WIP in a chat or a document title to say it is not ready.

If you see WIP on a pull request or a project card, it means do not merge or review yet.

The meaning is the same everywhere: something started, not finished. Only the cost and the cash tied up in it change from one setting to the next.

WIP, Work in Progress, is value caught halfway: in a factory it is money on the floor, in a sprint it is cards in the middle column. In both places it is worth tracking.

WIP Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of WIP?

The full form of WIP is Work in Progress: goods, projects or tasks that have been started but not yet completed.

Is WIP an asset or a liability?

In a factory it is a current asset, part of inventory. On a construction contract billed ahead of progress, the net contract position can appear as a liability instead.

How do you calculate WIP?

Take the opening WIP balance, add materials, labour and overheads incurred during the period, then subtract the cost of goods completed. What remains is closing work in progress.

What is the difference between WIP and finished goods?

WIP has entered production but is not complete. Finished goods are complete and ready to sell. A product moves from one to the other when production finishes.

Why should a company reduce WIP?

Because WIP ties up cash that could be used elsewhere and exposes the business to obsolescence and cost overruns. Lower WIP usually means faster flow, fewer bottlenecks and better delivery dates.

What is a WIP limit in Kanban?

It is the maximum number of tasks a team may have in progress at once. When the column is full, nothing new starts until something finishes, which shortens cycle time.
