In 2018, in Navtej Singh Johar, it read down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which had criminalised consensual same-sex relations between adults. The new criminal code, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which replaced the IPC in 2024, does not carry that section.
In 2023 the Supreme Court declined to recognise same-sex marriage and left that question to Parliament. The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 deals with identity certificates and protection against discrimination. Use the terms and pronouns a person uses for themselves. Do not guess someone's identity from how they look, and never reveal what someone told you in confidence.

In newspapers the abbreviation changes with the writer, so check what the article means. A company policy that mentions LGBTQ inclusion usually covers non-discrimination in hiring, benefits for partners and respectful use of names and pronouns.
In Indian schools and colleges, you may also see the term used in diversity and counselling programmes. If a term in an article is unclear, look it up on a reliable reference source, and avoid gossip or social media threads.
