IUI Full Form
Intrauterine Insemination
What does IUI stand for? A medical term, explained.
IUI Full Form in English, letter by letter
IUI is Intrauterine Insemination, a fertility treatment in which washed sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation.
IUI Full Form in Indian Languages
IUI is usually the first assisted treatment couples meet before IVF. It stands for Intrauterine Insemination, and the name is given below in six Indian languages.
What happens in an IUI cycle
The IUI full form is Intrauterine Insemination. Sperm from the partner or a donor is collected and then washed in the laboratory. Washing concentrates the fast-moving sperm and removes seminal fluid, prostaglandins and debris that can cause cramping.
The prepared sample is drawn into a thin, soft catheter, passed through the cervix and released into the uterus. The procedure takes about five to ten minutes and needs no anaesthesia. Most women compare the sensation to a Pap smear.
Timing decides the success rate. The doctor tracks the leading follicle by ultrasound, and in many cycles gives an HCG trigger injection to time ovulation. Insemination is usually done about 24 to 36 hours after the trigger, or on the day a natural LH surge is detected.
A typical cycle runs like this. Tablets such as letrozole or clomiphene, or low-dose injections, are started in the first days of the period. Scans on about day 9 to 12 check follicle size. When a follicle reaches about 18 to 20 mm, the trigger is given and insemination is planned. A pregnancy test follows two weeks later.
Who it suits, and who should skip it
Good candidates include couples with unexplained infertility after basic tests, a mild male factor (low count or motility that improves after washing), problems with cervical mucus, and single women or same-sex couples using donor sperm.
IUI fits poorly when the fallopian tubes are blocked (a tube-patency test such as an HSG should come first), when ovarian reserve is very low, or when the male factor is severe. These situations usually point to IVF instead.
Before the first cycle a clinic normally runs a basic work-up: semen analysis, thyroid and prolactin levels, an HSG to confirm that at least one tube is open, and an AMH test or antral follicle count to judge ovarian reserve. These results decide whether IUI is worth trying or whether IVF should start sooner.
Age changes the arithmetic. Under 35, most clinics will try about three IUI cycles before changing the approach. Above 40, many specialists suggest moving to IVF after one or two attempts, because each cycle that passes costs more than it used to.
Success rates, cost and what comes after
Success per cycle is usually around 10 to 20 per cent, depending on age, the cause of infertility and whether ovulation-induction drugs were used. Doctors often quote the cumulative chance over three cycles, not a single cycle.
In India an IUI cycle costs much less than IVF. Typical charges are in the range of a few thousand to a few tens of thousands of rupees, with medicines, scans and the trigger billed separately in some clinics. One IVF cycle usually costs about Rs 1.5 to 2.5 lakh before injections and embryo freezing.
You can return to work the same day. Light spotting and mild cramping are normal. A blood test for beta-hCG about 12 to 14 days after the procedure confirms the result. Severe pain, rapid weight gain or breathlessness after stimulation drugs need a doctor's call the same day.
Clinics in metros such as Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru and Hyderabad quote different packages. Some include ultrasound monitoring and the trigger injection in a single price, and others bill every scan separately. Compare what each quote actually includes before deciding.
IUI versus IVF: the comparison everyone searches
IVF bypasses more of the natural process. Eggs are collected and fertilised in the laboratory and an embryo is transferred to the uterus. Success per cycle is higher, often 40 per cent or more for women under 35 using their own eggs, but the cost and the physical demands are several times greater.
IUI is cheaper, less invasive and can begin in the first month of treatment, which is why it is the usual first step. Its limit is simple: it cannot help when the tubes are blocked or sperm quality is very poor, because fertilisation must still take place inside the body.
Regulation matters too. The Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021 brought ART clinics, donors, consent and record keeping under a legal framework. Ask your clinic about its ART registration and about the counselling process before starting any cycle.
IUI is a short procedure timed to ovulation and is usually tried before IVF. Ask your doctor for the results of the basic work-up and for the number of cycles planned, so you know in advance when the plan will be reviewed.
IUI Full Form: Common Questions
What is the full form of IUI?
The full form of IUI is Intrauterine Insemination, a fertility procedure in which prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus.
Is IUI painful?
Most women feel only mild cramping, like period pain. The procedure takes 5 to 10 minutes, no anaesthesia is needed, and normal activity can usually resume straight away.
How many IUI cycles can be attempted?
Clinics commonly suggest about three cycles for women under 35 before reassessing. Over 40, the discussion usually turns to IVF sooner, because response declines with age.
What is the success rate of IUI?
Roughly 10 to 20 per cent per cycle. It rises with ovulation-induction drugs in suitable patients and falls with age, tubal problems or severe male-factor infertility. Doctors usually quote the cumulative rate over three cycles.
What is the difference between IUI and IVF?
IUI places sperm in the uterus and fertilisation occurs naturally. In IVF, eggs are retrieved, fertilised in a laboratory and an embryo is transferred. IUI is cheaper and gentler, and IVF has higher success per cycle.
When can I take a pregnancy test after IUI?
A blood beta-hCG test is usually advised about 12 to 14 days after the procedure. A home urine test done too early can give a false negative, or a false positive if an hCG trigger was used.
