BHP is the power figure in car and bike brochures. It stands for Brake Horsepower and measures what the engine produces before the gearbox and wheels take their share. The term in six Indian languages follows.

Where the word brake comes from

The term comes from the Prony brake, a friction device from the early nineteenth century that loaded an engine's shaft and measured the force needed to hold it steady. The load acted like a brake on the machine, so the measured output became known as brake horsepower.

It has nothing to do with a car's braking system. Today the same measurement comes from a dynamometer, which loads the engine or the whole vehicle and records torque across the rev range.

Power is torque multiplied by rotational speed, so a small engine can match a bigger one if it revs higher. A useful working formula is that power in kilowatts equals torque in newton metres multiplied by RPM and divided by 9,549.

The horse in the name goes back to James Watt, who in the late eighteenth century needed a way to sell steam engines to people who used horses. His figure for one horsepower, 33,000 foot-pounds of work per minute, stayed in use long after engines replaced horses.

BHP, PS and kW: the unit confusion

One mechanical horsepower is about 746 watts, so 100 bhp is roughly 74.6 kilowatts. The metric horsepower, written PS (from the German Pferdestärke) or CV, is slightly smaller at 735.5 watts, which means 100 PS is about 98.6 bhp.

A car quoting 120 PS and another quoting 118 bhp are therefore close to identical on the road. Two-wheelers quote bhp more often, while electric vehicles in India are usually advertised in kilowatts, sometimes with bhp alongside.

Both figures are measured before losses. The power that reaches the wheels, called wheel horsepower, is typically 10 to 15 per cent lower for a two-wheel-drive car, and usually lower still for an all-wheel-drive one.

Weight puts the figures in perspective. A motorcycle quoting 120 bhp with a kerb weight near 200 kg is in a different league from a 1,400 kg car quoting the same 120 bhp, which is why power-to-weight appears in every serious comparison.

A quick check: a bike with 20 bhp and a car with 20 PS are almost the same power, but they move different weights, so compare them only after you convert to a common unit and look at the weight each must pull.

What BHP does not tell you

Peak bhp comes at one specific engine speed, often well above the rpm used in city driving. An engine that makes its peak power at 6,000 rpm feels different in traffic from one that makes similar power at 4,000 rpm.

Torque and its spread matter more for daily driving, which is why reviewers talk about mid-range pull and turbo lag. Gearing, kerb weight and the transmission also decide acceleration, so two cars with identical bhp can behave quite differently.

For a fair comparison, divide power by weight. A 1,000 kg car with 100 bhp and a 1,600 kg car with 100 bhp share a headline figure but not the performance. Test-drive both in the conditions you will actually use them.

Engine size matters for tax and registration in India, where two-wheelers and small cars are often grouped by capacity in cc and, for some rules, by length. Bhp alone does not decide what you pay, so ask the dealer which figure the registration category uses. Also remember that bhp quoted by a maker is measured under test conditions, and real-world figures vary with fuel quality, altitude and temperature.

Other meanings of BHP

Outside motoring, BHP is the short name of BHP Group, the Australian mining company that began as the Broken Hill Proprietary Company in 1885 and is now one of the world's largest miners of iron ore and copper.

In engineering papers you may see other horsepower terms, such as shaft horsepower (SHP) for turbines and pumps, and the metric PS. Checking the unit printed beside the number avoids most confusion.

For Indian buyers, the practical rule is to confirm whether the brochure quotes PS or bhp, then look at torque and kerb weight before comparing two vehicles.

BHP tells you how hard an engine can work at its best, not how fast a car feels in traffic. Read it with torque, kerb weight and the unit used, and brochure numbers become easier to compare.
