The body behind most bank vacancy notifications

IBPS is an autonomous body that conducts recruitment examinations for participating banks. Most public sector banks other than the State Bank of India use it for entry-level hiring, along with regional rural banks and some other financial institutions. When a bank announces a Common Recruitment Process, that phrase almost always means IBPS is conducting it.

Its roots go back to 1975, when a Personnel Selection Services unit was set up to help banks recruit, and it was converted into IBPS in 1984. What that history gives candidates today is a standard process: one registration, one set of scores and similar rules whether you apply to a bank in Guwahati or Gujarat.

Candidates also sit exams from other recruiters in the same year, such as SSC and the RBI and NABARD recruitment, which run on their own schedules.

Which posts the exams lead to

The exams divide by role and cadre, and choosing the wrong one can cost a year. The main families are these.

IBPS Clerk is a clerical post in a participating bank, covering counter work, data entry and customer service. The selection is a preliminary and a main written exam, with no interview, and a local language test for the state you choose.

IBPS PO is the probationary officer route, the managerial entry. Selection is a preliminary exam, a main exam and an interview, followed by a probation period during which postings can include branches in rural areas.

IBPS SO and the RRB exams are separate. The Specialist Officer exam recruits for roles that need specific qualifications, such as IT, agriculture, law or HR. The RRB exams fill posts in regional rural banks, from office assistant to officer scale, and these banks work within one state.

The stages you will go through

For most posts the pattern is a preliminary exam, a main exam, and then an interview or a skill test. Prelims are a screening round with sectional timing, so speed matters more than depth. Mains are heavier and often include a computer aptitude or descriptive paper that candidates underprepare because nobody told them it existed.

Officer-level posts carry an interview that counts towards the final merit, while clerical posts skip the interview but need a proficiency test in the state language, unless you can show that you studied it in school. Always read the exact scheme in the current notification, because patterns are revised.

Eligibility, documents and the application

The basic qualification for Clerk, PO and RRB Officer Scale I is a graduate degree from a recognised university, with an age range that differs by cadre and an upper age relaxation for reserved categories. Proficiency in the official language of the state or region is a requirement for clerical posts. Specialist Officer posts ask for specific degrees.

Applications are online. Keep a scanned photograph, signature, thumb impression and a handwritten declaration ready in the format specified, plus category certificates if you claim a relaxation. The notification lists the exact sizes. A wrongly sized upload is a common reason for rejection, and the application fee is not refunded.

IBPS is not SBI, and one score can mean several offers

The State Bank of India runs its own recruitment, separate from IBPS, so many candidates sit both in the same year. Among IBPS participating banks, however, one score can put you on merit lists for several banks, and you are asked to rank your preferences. That preference list is an underrated decision because it decides where you will live for the next few years.

On preparation, reasoning and quantitative aptitude reward practice more than reading, and banking awareness and current affairs decide mains. Attempt free mock tests under a timer, find where your time leaks and fix that first. Most people who fail do not lack knowledge; they lose the sectional clock.

Banking exams can be learnt in a year if you treat them as a habit. Fix a daily slot, take a mock test every week, keep an error notebook and read the IBPS notification for the exact scheme. Decide early whether you want an officer's career or a clerk's, because the two lead to very different decades.

IBPS Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of IBPS?

IBPS stands for Institute of Banking Personnel Selection. It is an autonomous body that conducts recruitment examinations for participating public sector banks, regional rural banks and other financial institutions.

What is the difference between IBPS PO and IBPS Clerk?

PO is the officer cadre entry, with a written exam plus interview and quicker responsibility. Clerk is the clerical cadre, with counter and back-office work and selection mostly on the written exam. Both are graduate-level exams.

Does the State Bank of India recruit through IBPS?

No. SBI conducts its own recruitment for clerk, probationary officer and specialist posts, with its own pattern and timing. IBPS covers the participating public sector banks and regional rural banks.

What is the difference between IBPS and IBPS RRB?

IBPS exams are for the participating public sector banks, and a posting can be anywhere in the country. IBPS RRB fills posts in regional rural banks, which operate within defined states, so the location is more predictable.

How should I prepare for IBPS exams?

Start with one free timed mock test and study where your time goes. Reasoning and quantitative aptitude improve with timed practice, while banking awareness and current affairs matter for mains. Review every wrong answer.

Is there negative marking in IBPS exams?

Yes, in the objective papers there is a deduction for wrong answers, commonly a fraction of the mark. Check the current notification for the exact rule, because it has been changed from time to time.
